Obituary

Rosemary Huth Holbrook, 96, passed away on December 13, 2024.  She was born on January 26, 1928 in San Antonio, Tx.  Rosemary Huth Holbrook is a descendent of Ferdinand Louis Huth, pioneer of Castroville, Tx and the Elizabeth Yuba Murphy Taaffe family, early pioneers of California.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Elena Taaffe Huth and Theodore George Huth, her husband, Francis McCauley Holbrook, her brothers, Theodore George Huth, Jr., William Karl Huth, James Edward Huth and Robert Louis Huth, her grandson, Marc Russell Bullard and son-in-law Ronald Edward Siliven. She is survived by her 8 children: Julia Helen Siliven, Kathleen McKay, Rosemary Cox and Kenneth, Vincent Patrick Holbrook and Diane, Virginia Marie Bullard and Michael, Margaret Mary Sanchez and Larry, William Charles Holbrook and Donna, and Elizabeth Anne Holbrook; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Including her newest great-granddaughter, Elena Marie Bullard, named after her great-great-grandmother.

Rosemary grew up in San Antonio working in the family-owned Huth Seed Store on Market Street.  She attended St. Gerard and Ursuline grade schools and graduated from Burbank High School.  During High School, Rosemary was active in the Civil Air Patrol during WWII.  Growing up with only brothers, she learned automotive repairs and car racing.  As a young girl, her father helped with the restoration of the snake exhibit for the reptile house at the San Antonio Zoo.  She was given a blue snake and wore it proudly into the Piggly Wiggly grocery store.  She attended Tarleton State College but returned home to work and later moved to California and worked at a small startup company, IBM.  After her grandmother died, Rosemary returned to San Antonio, where she met Francis "Archie" Holbrook in a local beer joint playing the marble tables.  They were married at St. Gerard Church on November 11, 1949.  Rosemary and Archie were founding members of St. Benedict's Church where Rosemary was active in the PTA and the CYO.  She coached softball, volleyball, basketball and track for over 25 years with the most softball wins in CYO history.  After Archie passed away in 1991, Rosemary remained active in her community.   When the members of the St. Gerard Maternity Guild outgrew the need for baby clothing, they continued to meet for over 50 years playing Bunco and swapping stories about their families. Rosemary enjoyed traveling to California to see her relatives.  But mostly, she liked driving down Tioga Pass without brakes and annual trips to Las Vegas. While she was not known for her cooking skills, her Sunday pot roast was renown.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Bulverde Spring Branch Activity Center (https://bsbac.com/) or Hope Hospice (hopehospice.net).  Rosemary enjoyed playing Bingo each week and eating cake and pie at the Bulverde Activity Center and the family is grateful to Hope Hospice for the loving care that they provided Rosemary in recent years.
