Obituary

Kimberlyn Jewel Rodriguez, born July 13, 1994, daughter to Raul Jr. and Diana L. Rodriguez, chose to end her journey on this earth Thursday, November 18, 2021. She was 27.

She is survived by life-partner Israel Ramirez, their children Leo (7) and Iliana (4); her parents Raul Jr. and Diana L. Rodriguez; her grandmothers Henrieta Rodriguez, Oralia Serna; her besties/sisters, Megan Juarez, Wendy Casanova; numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and her abundance of pets. She was an only child.

Kimberlyn was preceded in death by her grandfathers Raul Rodriguez Sr. and Leonard Serna Jr.

Kimberlyn was born in Fort Hood, Texas. Born into a military family, she grew up in several cities in the U.S. and overseas making some lifelong friends along the way.

The family settled back in San Antonio, Texas when she was 13 years old. She attended East Central High School. Then went on to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio, earning her Bachelor's degree of Science in Health and by doing so became the first university graduate in her family.

Kimberlyn, in her own way, was doing what she could to raise awareness on mental illness which is the reason for sharing her true story. She would have liked to help anyone struggling with this medical condition.

She was deeply loved by us all. Anyone that knew her would tell you she was beautiful inside and out. She was loyal and strong-willed. Kimberlyn left a positive impression on so many of those she touched. She was simply happy, genuine, forgiving, full of joy and light, and she spread all she had to those around her. Little did any of us know, she didn't save enough light for herself.

No one knew the darkness she faced when alone. Kimberlyn was very private and rarely discussed her pain within. And when she did, it was more a dismissive complaint leading us to believe she was fine. We did not hear of or see her insurmountable and all-consuming pain. Realizing that someone could so successfully hide in broad daylight, someone so put together and emit as much joy as Kimberlyn did, has left all who knew her shaken to the core.

Depression is a mental illness and is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a medical condition, just like heart disease or diabetes. We all need to talk about it to raise awareness. More importantly, to listen. And if talking about it, exposing it, shouting it from the rooftops, will help even one person find a way to talk about their pain and get the help they need, then our beloved Kimberlyn's death will not be in vain. See the signs, save a life, we cannot afford to lose another light.
