José María Neaves, 61, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully among his family and friends on December 3, in his home. Born in San Antonio to José and Tomasa Neaves, he lived his life with courage and effort after a painful loss, at 16 years old, of his mother to cancer.
He was an avid reader of fiction and had an affinity for cars, working tirelessly to provide for his family in many ways, including serving as an automotive mechanic for 35 years. He was a man with a natural intelligence and adventurous spirit. He loved learning, photography, traveling, golf and fishing. His obsessions included most sports, and he was fanatical about the Washington Redskins and San Antonio Spurs.
Among all of his accomplishments, being a loving husband and best friend to his wife, Sylvia Neaves, was his greatest. José and Sylvia were married at 19 years old, on August 9, 1975, in St. Benedict's Catholic Church in San Antonio's southeast side. Sam Houston High School sweethearts, they were married for 41 years and dedicated their lives to each other, serving as a model of love, commitment and never-ending devotion.
José was proud of his four children, Tomasita Hernandez (Alfredo Hernandez); José María Neaves, IV (Sarah Neaves); Rosario Neaves; and Juan Enrique Neaves, of San Antonio. He is survived by his sister Rosita Neaves (Henry Oliveras); Florinda (Samuel) Arambula; Maria Trini Neaves (Charles Weaver); brother Benito (Pearl) Neaves. A loving grandfather and great-grandfather, he also is survived by 6 grandchildren, Jasmine Marie Hernandez (Raymond Cerda); Alfredo Hernandez, IV; Alejandro Joseph Neaves; Serena B. Neaves; Cielo Hernandez; Jimmy Hernandez; and 3 great-grandchildren; Natalie Renae Cerda; Teresa Renae Cerda; and, baby-to-be Cerda.
Life is a precious, ephemeral adventure. Show those you love how much you love them, every day, every moment. Don't wait.
Visitation will be held at Heritage Oaks Mortuary on Wednesday, December 7th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will depart the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 8th for a 9:00 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Meadowlawn Memorial Park.
