Obituary

Jerry J. Beauchamp, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family, went home to be with the Lord on May 19, 2021 at the age of 89.

Jerry was born on April 7, 1932 in Coleman, Texas to Joe and Stella Beauchamp (nee Needham). The oldest of five children, Jerry was a born leader and true public servant who dedicated his life to helping others. After high school, Jerry made his way to San Antonio where he worked and trained as a Vocational Counselor at the San Antonio State Hospital. It was there where he met the love of his life, a nursing student named Clara Walker, whom he married on September 18, 1954. Jerry and Clara went on to have five children, Sharon, Teri, Susie, Joe and Mary Ann, within whom they instilled the love of family, service and Jesus.

Throughout his career, Jerry was dedicated to his community, school district, county and state. As a State Farm agent from 1964 to 2021, he not only helped to provide necessary insurance to his customers, but he was also so invested in the betterment of their lives that he would regularly assist those customers with everything from filing their taxes to helping them understand their phone bill. He was the ultimate Good Neighbor. He was very active in the church up until his last days, including serving as past Deacon, past Chairman & personnel. Currently member of the First  Baptist Church-San Antonio where he was a greeter & provided security.

A staunch advocate for education and the public school system, Jerry served as the President of the Board of Trustees of the East Central Independent School District from 1979 to 1985. His desire to have a greater impact led to his ultimate election as the State Representative for District 119 in the Texas House of Representatives in 1986.

As a member of the House, Jerry earned the impressive distinction of passing an unprecedented number of bills as a freshman legislator, and was issued an official proclamation from the Bexar County Commissioners Court for having passed 100% of their 53 target bills during one session. Landmark bills during his time in office include the Robin Hood bill, which insured equal funding for low-income school districts, and the Alternative Dispute Resolution bill, which revolutionized civil legal procedures in the State of Texas.

After leaving office, Jerry continued serving his community as a Dispute Resolution Mediator for Bexar County, and as a certified Domestic Violence Advocate for the San Antonio Police Department. He also gave his time as a Reserve Deputy Constable for Bexar County, Precinct 4 from 1980 to the present. Jerry also enjoyed acting as the court bailiff and attending San Antonio's Martin Luther King, Jr. march every year, providing security for the dignitary speakers.

Jerry's heart was full of love; love of God and love of people. His accolades, too numerous to mention, only scratch the surface of the life of an amazing man of the people.

Jerry (Gramps) was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Stella Beauchamp, his sisters Freida Beauchamp, Billie June "Bit" Wilkins, and his son, Joe Ross Beauchamp. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Clara, their daughters, Sharon Shaw (Mark), Teri Chance (Jack), Carla "Susie" Ward (Tim) and Mary Ann Martinez (Paul), grandchildren; Randy (Dana), Holly (Cliff), Lindsay (Zach), Shelly, Amy (Tony), Chad (Kim), Taylor, Gino, Lucas, Lance (Courtni), Ashley (Sherman), Bryan and Brene', great-grandchildren; Blake, Luke, Mikey, Jase, Corbin, Kyleigh, Charlie, Louie, Viviann, Cecilia, Claire, and Pablo; his siblings, Joe "Bud" Beauchamp (Charlene), Doug Beauchamp (Barbara), and brother-in-law Bobby Wilkins (Bit) and also, numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
