Edwin Kent
Reed
Jun 22, 1949 — Feb 18, 2022
San Antonio
Edwin Kent Reed went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 18, 2022, at the age of 72. Ed was born on June 22, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas and spent his formative years with his family in San Antonio until his graduation from Harlandale High School. Following high school, Ed joined the US Navy (1968-1971) and served aboard the USS Saint Paul during the Vietnam War. He remained a member of the USS Saint Paul Association until the time of his death, often traveling throughout the country for reunions with his former shipmates.
His association with the military never ended, as he was an active member of V.F.W. Post #837, serving in various roles including Chaplain, Trustee, and Jr. Vice Commander and actively participated in all VFW activities from calling bingo to marching in parades.
Ed went on to obtain a Bachelor's of Business Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1982. Afterwards he worked as an accountant for several companies until his formal retirement, but he continued to work as a tax preparer until January of this year. Although Ed met Mary Jane later in life they had great years together dancing and traveling. When not cruising the ocean with Mary Jane, Ed especially enjoyed time with lifelong friends from Harlandale High School and the US Navy.
His great love, however, was spending time with family playing washers, cheering for the Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Spurs and UTSA Roadrunners.
The family would like to thank the staff at North East Methodist Hospital in Live Oak, especially nurse Karl who had a gentle touch with the family during Ed's final days.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin D., and Evelyn O. Reed. He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Mary Jane Reed; daughter, Melissa Wilmurth (Justin); step-children, Christine Lujan, Richard Lujan (Jo Ann), Catherine Lujan (Lucy) and Robert Lujan; sister, LaQuita Kalisky (Lefty); brother, Jerry Reed; nieces, Kristy and Ashley; numerous grandchildren and a great grandson.
Visitation will be held at Heritage Oaks Mortuary on Wednesday, March 16th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life to be held at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. with interment following in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m.
