David J
Kvapil
Oct 4, 1954 — Sep 24, 2015
On Thursday, September 24, 2015, David J. Kvapil, age 60, lost his brave battle with melanoma cancer in San Antonio, Texas and was called to his heavenly reward by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Dave''s early education began at St. Cecilia Catholic Elementary School (Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word) and continued at St. Gerard Catholic High School (School Sisters of Notre Dame). Dave then received a George Brackenridge Scholarship to attend St. Mary''s University (Marianists) where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree -- Cum Laude. He finalized his formal education at Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas, receiving a Master of Science in Accounting degree - Magna Cum Laude. He later became a Certified Public Accountant.
After graduation he moved to Houston, joining the prestigious international accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand (now "pwc" or PricewaterhouseCoopers). He subsequently moved to Dallas to continue his work for the firm, developing his expertise in the energy industry. In 1992 Dave joined Southern Union Company in Austin, Texas, where he eventually retired as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer managing all finance and accounting functions. He was instrumental in growing Southern Union into the nation''s fourth largest publicly-held natural gas pipeline and distribution company. Upon retirement at the age of 50 years, he mentioned to a friend, "Another dollar will not make me any happier."
After Dave retired he contributed his time and treasure to charitable and community programs which exemplified his compassion for others and his eagerness to help. His volunteer activities included 15 Habitat for Humanity Global Village builds in 11 countries (Team Leader), English teacher in Prague, Czech Republic, after the "wall" came down, Archdiocese of San Antonio Finance Council (Audit Committee Chairman), San Antonio Conservation Society (Finance Chairman for "A Night in Old San Antonio"), St. Joseph Church (Finance Council Chairman), St. Gerard High School (Finance Committee Chairman) and Catholic Charities'' Guardianship Services (2012 Volunteer Court Monitor of the Year).
His most dedicated volunteer commitment was his hope to establish a Cristo Rey San Antonio High School. During that 18-month effort, he admirably chaired a Feasibility Study Committee with the hopes of opening such school in this city. Unfortunately, the initiative did not come to fruition.
Dave''s support of educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged students was wonderfully generous. He endowed scholarships for Cristo Rey Network High School graduates to attend St. Mary''s and Texas A&M universities and provided a substantial financial gift to the Cristo Rey San Antonio High School, contingent upon an official opening of the school by 2020.
In his leisure time, Dave enjoyed being with family and friends, appreciating art and painting beautiful oil and acrylic works, traveling, reading, gardening and home remodeling.
Dave was born into a loving home in San Antonio, TX on October 4, 1954, the son of Emil V. and Dorothy Broz Kvapil. He is preceded in death by his father Emil and by his brother Ronald (Ronnie). He is survived by his mother, Dorothy, brother Michael (Mike) Kvapil and wife Edith, sister Joan Kvapil Slade, nieces Lauren Slade and Tiffany Adams-Kvapil, and nephew Travis Slade along with several aunts, an uncle, numerous cousins and many friends.
A Rosary service will be held at St. Gerard Catholic Church at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 2nd, with visitation from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Martinez, Texas, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 3rd. A private burial service of Dave''s cremated ashes is planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice, the Cristo Rey Network (14 East Jackson Boulevard, Suite 1200, Chicago, IL 60604) or Habitat for Humanity International (270 Peachtree Street NW, Suite 1300, Atlanta, GA 30303).
